Sher lives half the year in San Miguel de Allende where she and her husband, Gary, own a home. They started the Latin American Relief Fund in October of 2017, a non-profit 501(c)3 in Portland, Oregon to raise funds to aid migrants and refugees. There main project is helping Albergue ABBA, a non-profit Mexican shelter run by a humanitarian director in Celaya. LARF pays the rent and utilities for the shelter and provides emergency help like food and clothing when needed, especially when the large caravans from Central American arrive. Latin American Relief Fund's board of directors all reside either full-time or part time in San Miguel de Allende.
Sher is also a writer and artist. Her first novel is titled Under the Salvadoran Sun, a love story wrapped around the issue of immigration.
