We’ve been waiting for this class for three years! So many of you were disappointed when we had to cancel Terry Fitzpatrick’s class on Ireland that began on St. Patrick’s Day, 2020. So we brought him back. Terry will be presenting the History of Ireland from 1845 to 1939 using examples from literature, art and politics. We welcome him, finally, with open arms. Classes will meet beginning St. Patrick’s Day, Friday, March 17, and continue the following Monday, Wednesday and Friday, March 20, 22 and 24.

How did this small island nation with just eight million people (in 1840) wrest independence from England, build a reputation for revolutionary violence, breed so many great artists in such a short period, and forge a world-wide renown for blarney (aka, storytelling)? The course will focus on the intersection of Irish politics/politicians (O’Connell, Parnell, DeValera) and Irish art/writers (Shaw, Wilde, Yeats, Joyce, Synge, O’Casey, Beckett). And why has “home rule” has divided the people of Ireland from at least 1801 (Act of Union) right up to now?
