Son of ‘El Chapo’ Freed After Fierce Cartel Mobilization in Mexico
Residents of Mexico’s Sinaloa state capital of Culiacán were paralyzed with fear as gunfire erupted after authorities briefly detained and then released a son of former Sinaloa Cartel capo “El Chapo” Guzmán, underscoring just how far the country’s security situation has spiraled out of control.

Armed gunmen hidden inside a home attacked a team of 30 members of Mexico’s National Guard and Army allegedly conducting a “routine patrol” in the Tres Ríos area of Culiacán on October 17, Security Minister Alfonso Durazo announced in a press release.

After fending off the attack and seizing control of the house, authorities temporarily apprehended Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of imprisoned former Sinaloa Cartel captain Joaquín Guzmán Loera, alias “El Chapo,” before releasing him.

Military admits poor planning, hasty actions led to Culiacán shootouts
Federal security officials admitted on Friday that the operation to capture a son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in Culiacán, Sinaloa, on Thursday was poorly planned and hastily executed.

National Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval told a press conference in the northern city that Federal Police officers, soldiers and National Guard members who participated in the operation to apprehend Ovidio Guzmán López “acted in a hasty manner” due to “their eagerness to obtain positive results.”

The arrest of the 28-year-old Sinaloa Cartel leader triggered a wave of attacks that terrorized residents of the Sinaloa capital on Thursday afternoon and left eight people dead.

San Miguel de Allende: after the tourist shine, neighborhoods that live and demand attention
There is a part of the municipality of San Miguel de Allende that few know, which does not appear in advertising campaigns: its neighborhoods, whose face denounces inequality, poverty, violence and scarce opportunities, something that begins to be denounced beyond the comments in networks social, via local artistic activity, such as that of rapper Romeo Zk , the subject of a previous installment of POPLab .

The authorities of one of the best and most beautiful cities for life and tourism seem not to include their popular colonies in such distinctions and much less, try to do something to improve the situation of its inhabitants

    Mexican Skulls
For the last two years during the Day of the Dead season, Mexico City's main boulevard, the Paseo de la Reforma, has been decorated with enormous skulls called "Mexicráneos". These skulls are all identical in size and shape, but each one is decorated differently by artists from Mexico and other countries. This art exhibition has been sponsored by J. García López, one of Mexico City's funeral home chains. The third edition is now on display, and this year´s theme is "Orgullo Mexicano"... Mexican Pride.

Today I left Alejandro's house and went to the condo that I rent. It is located just a block from the Mexico City World Trade Center. As I passed by that building this afternoon to run some errands, I was surprised to see four of the "Mexicráneos" on display in the fountain pool by the World Trade Center.

Extraordinary pictures of the most ancient trees on Earth
Photographer Beth Moon spent 14 years traveling around the world taking pictures of the most ancient trees on Earth. The resulting photos—printed in platinum for a wider tonal range and stunning luminosity—are compiled in her book Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time.

Many of the trees I have photographed have survived because they are out of reach of civilization; on mountainsides, private estates, or on protected land. Certain species exist only in a few isolated areas of the world. For example; there are 6 species of spectacular baobabs, found only on the island of Madagascar. Sadly, the baobab is now one of the three most endangered species on the island.
