This month, Rodrigo Lopez, Audubon board member and owner of Travelian Tours, will be introducing us to a new birding site along the Rio Laja, located below the Allende Dam. Luke Rich, who has years of birding experience, will also be guiding this trip.

This area where we will be birding, is one of the healthiest sections of the Rio Laja, with abundant water flowing in the river's channel and a variety of trees, that makes for great bird habitat and a refreshing morning walk.

Our access point is the property of Franke's Vivero, where a large selection of succulents are propagated. Before we leave we'll have a little time to wander through the nursery, and make a purchase if you would like, and then depart for the community of La Huerta to visit an ancient Sabino tree (the national tree of Mexico) that some claim to be one of the oldest trees in the country. It's circumference of nearly 20 meters makes it something to marvel over.

We will have binoculars to lend and spotting scopes to view the birds up close. Sturdy shoes, layered clothing and water are recommended.
