Birthing the baby of your book into the actual world of the publishing market may take more creativity, perseverance and savvy than it took for you to write the book. When it comes to book publicity, Jamie Brickhouse knows what happens (and doesn’t happen) from both sides. He spent over two decades in the publishing industry at the helm of the publicity and lecture divisions of Warner Books (Hachette Books), St. Martin’s Press, Basic Books, and HarperCollins, and used the experience to successfully publicize and market his critically-acclaimed Dangerous When Wet: A Memoir of Booze Sex and My Mother. Brickhouse will explain what to expect and what not expect from your publishing house, how to partner with your publishing house, whether or not to hire a freelance publicist, how you can maximize your efforts and connections (no matter how big or small), the power of social media and how to harness it, getting book reviews and interviews, creating successful book events, and why you should leave nothing to chance. Brickhouse will candidly share the successes and failures his had as both a publicist and an author. This hands-on workshop will teach students how to write a pitch letter, press release, pitch the media, create successful and innovative author appearances from bookstores and beyond, and the nuts and bolts a book tour. Students will walk away with an action plan of how to publicize and market their books when the time comes.

JAMIE BRICKHOUSE is the author of the critically-acclaimed Dangerous When Wet: A Memoir of Booze Sex and My Mother (St. Martin’s Press), which is “Required Reading” in Mary Karr’s The Art of Memoir, was featured on NBC’s Today Show, and named an Amazon “Best Book of May 2015” and Book Chase “2015 Nonfiction Top 10.” He has been published in the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Washington Post, Daily Beast, Salon, and Huffington Post. A comedic storyteller, Brickhouse has appeared on The Moth Podcast, is a four-time Moth StorySLAM champ, a National Storytelling Network Grand Slam champion, has recorded voices on Beavis and Butthead, appeared on PBS-TV’s Stories from the Stage, and is the writer and performer of an award-winning solo show based on Dangerous When Wet, as well as the award-winning solo show, I Favor My Daddy. Brickhouse spent over two decades in the publishing industry and is founder and owner of redBrick Agency, a speakers bureau for authors. He grew up in Beaumont, Texas, graduated from Trinity University and the Radcliffe (now Columbia) Publishing Course, and lives with his husband Michael in New York City.
