Do not send me money. Do not send this website money. We are not soliciting and are not accepting donations for this site. If you click a link, on this site, to another site make sure you are where you want to be before donating there. We are not responsible for what you do on other web sites.

An anonymous donor has provided $15,000 Mexican Pesos to be given to charitable organizations in the month of July 2018 through this website. The charities should operate in San Miguel de Allende or nearby. The donations are to be made in July or the first half of August.

Here is one list of charities: charities in San Miguel de Allende under the umbrella of San Miguel Community Foundation. Another is NGO and Charities of San Miguel.

Membership in this website is free. The website is targeted at English-speaking expats in San Miguel de Allende. Members are expected to have some connection to San Miguel de Allende. To become a member click the Sign Up button above on the Desktop version. In the mobile version click the top left "hamburger menu" (three stacked lines) then Create Account.

    1. Members of this website can nominate charities by posting the organization name and contact information as a comment to this post. The judges will select a list of ten charities from the nominations for members to vote on.

    2. A poll will be placed on the website where members can vote for one charity of their choice from the list selected in #1 above. The $15,000 MXN in funds will be distributed to the top four finishers in the poll: $8,000 MXN to first, $4,000 MXN to second, $2,000 MXN to third and $1,000 MXN to fourth place.

    3. Attempts to unfairly game the system will be penalized. It is OK to inform others about this; it is not fine to create fake users to vote in the poll.

    4. The judges decisions are final as to which charities receive the funds; the rules may be changed if needed; these funds will be given away in July or August.

If this goes well, we will likely do this again, and tweak the process based on what we learn this first time. At the moment the panel of judges is me; I hope to expand that soon.

The Sociedad Protectora de Animales de San Miguel de Allende is the only no-kill shelter for cats and dogs in San Miguel. In existence since 1980, it has an average of 100 resident animals - 50 dogs and 50 cats - and more in foster care. The S.P.A. prides itself on ensuring that its animals are fully protected. All cats adopted from the S.P.A. come with sterilization, all current vaccinations, deworming, the feline leukemia/FIV test, and the feline leukemia vaccine and booster. All dogs adopted from the S.P.A. come with sterilization, all current vaccinations, deworming, the leptospirosis booster, and enrollment in the Green Paw Pet Registration Program.

The S.P.A. has a lower-cost onsite clinic with a full-time vet and vet assistant which, not only oversees the S.P.A. animals, but is also open to the San Miguel community. The website is https://www.spasanmiguel.org and contact information is

The S.P.A. does not receive any government support. It relies upon donations to keep its doors open. All donations are greatly appreciated!

    Ezequiel and Megan,

We are still figuring out how everything works and working out the kinks. Both of your posts sat in a moderation queue for a few hours before I noticed them. Perhaps because they were a first post and had external links? I'm not sure yet. Anyway, that caused your posts to not show up for a while and led to Ezequiel posting twice.

Thank you for this opportunity to nominate Mujeres en Cambio (www.mujeresencambio.org). Our mission is to educate young girls from the rural areas surrounding San Miguel as a means to end poverty. In 1995, we started with just 7 young girls and today we are providing scholarships to 140 girls in Secundaria and Preparatoria and to 42 young women in University. Our beca recipients start with us in 8th grade and continue through University if they maintain sufficiently high GPAs. We are currently witnessing an ever-increasing number of our beca recipients fulfilling ever-higher levels of education and are thrilled to have a subsequent increase in the number of our students entering University.

Thank you for this opportunity to nominate our charitable organization, Casita Linda, A.C.Casita Linda creates a dignified, safe, and empowering environment that provides a foundation of hope for families living in extreme poverty. We build homes for the less fortunate in the ejidos. Casita Linda now offers a series of intensive workshops to the recipients of our homes. The workshops are led by two gifted and impressive Mexican women, one of whom is a social worker and the other a lawyer. Twice a week for at least nine months, the women in a Casita Linda community gather to study, share, and work together. Their husbands join them for one of the sessions each week. Our workshops begin with topics such as goal-setting, nutrition, child care, home care, water conservation, organic gardening, making herbal remedies and other income-generating projects, and work up to such challenging issues as sexuality and family planning, addiction, and domestic violence. We also work with other nonprofits to provide additional services and referrals for our Casita Linda families.

I respectfully nominate cat shelter Santuario Felino Rey Ashoka, run tirelessly by Lola Cortina. She dedicates every single day of the week to helping stray cats (and also dogs), through trapping, sterilizing, vaccinating, and providing shelter, food, and adoptions to an unimaginable amount of strays. Lola is almost a one-woman show, with a small dedicated staff who help at her two shelter locations. She relies on donations and the compassion of those who know how dedicated she is to this unending and heart-wrenching work.

I also would gratefully nominate Lola Cortina and Santuario Felino Rey Ashoka. I've never seen anyone (Lola) so indefatigably dedicated to (quoting Sue Mathias) "this unending and heart-wrenching work" of assisting Nature's innocent creatures.
    Thank you.

I heartily support the nomination of Santuario Felino Rey Ashokia. The donation will help provide vet care, food, shelter, and the help that the many stray cats need. Lola houses and cares for a large amount of cats in two locations. I don't know how she does it!

Last year 15000 children received services thru the efforts of Patronato Por Ninos. Patronato is also the organization the runs the walking tours at the Jardin as a way to raise money. Thank you for this opportunity.
I would like to nominate the Asociacion de Amigos de los Animales de San Miguel de Allende, AC. This association was incorporated in October, 2001.

Amigos conducts on average, three blitzes each year in which approximately 300 dogs and cats are sterilized each time for free.
Our Mobile Clinic travels to the surrounding areas twice a month where 20 to 30 dogs are spayed or neutered in each community.
To date, Amigos de Animales has sterilized over 20,195 dogs and cats.

In May, 2017 , Amigos de Animales in conjuction with Santuario Felino Rey Ashoka began visiting each Tuesday the kindergartens of the local schools in San Miguel to create animal awareness and to teach, through interactive classes, respect for, sensitivity to and the proper care of domestic animals.

I would like to fully support the nomination for Santuario Felino Rey Ashoka - Lola Cortina. She is the most caring cat and kitten person - her organization rescues and attempts to adopt cats and kittens all over an Miguel. She provides medical care, sterilizations and shelter to the cats and kittens that she rescues and she provides education on the appropriate care of animals to the many communities surrounding San Miguel.

I would like to second the nomination for Patronato Pro Niños. Many of the children of San Miguel’s rural communities would never have medical or dental attention if it wasn’t for the services we provide. We can help save lives.

We need funding for our CRITICALLY ill children. These cases include leukemia, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, burns as well as others. Help give a child a healthy future.
